Summer learning loss occurs when youth fail to retain what they learned during the previous academic year, returning to school at a lower level than when they left.

Studies show that most youth lose about two months of grade-level equivalency in math and reading skills over the summer, but youth from low-income households experience even greater loss.

At Boys & Girls Clubs, we implement a program called Summer Brain Gain that’s designed to promote and sustain learning in youth of all ages during the summer. Through high-quality instruction, smaller group sizes, engaging programming and content aligned with school-year curricula, summer camp gives youth access to educational resources, support for learning and retaining academic content.
